How to skip a sponsor read by hand
Most sponsor reads last about a minute. In our analysis of 100 English videos, the median sponsor segment was 64 seconds long and half of them lasted between 24 and 94 seconds. That makes a few presses of L the fastest manual fix:
- When the read starts, press L six times to move about a minute ahead.
- If you overshoot the return to the topic, press J once to step back 10 seconds.
- Use the right arrow for the last few seconds; it moves in 5-second steps.
- If the creator added chapters, try Ctrl+→ or Option+→ first. A chapter often starts right after the sponsor.
Do chapters help with sponsors?
Sometimes. Creators who add chapters occasionally give the sponsor its own chapter, and the next-chapter shortcut then lands exactly where the content resumes. Many videos have no chapters, though, and a chapter can also start in the middle of an integrated read.
Hovering over the progress bar shows chapter names and, on many popular videos, a “Most replayed” graph. A low stretch in that graph can hint at a passage viewers tend to skip, which is sometimes the sponsor.
What about phones and TVs?
Keyboard shortcuts are a desktop feature. On the mobile app you can double-tap the right side of the video to skip forward; the step length is set in the app's settings. On TVs, the remote's right arrow seeks forward, and YouTube Premium members may see a Jump ahead prompt.
When to stop doing it by hand
Manual skipping is free and works everywhere, but it means watching for the pitch in every video. If you skip sponsors several times a day, an extension that does it for you saves attention more than time. SponsorSkip also uses Alt+Shift+S as its own shortcut to switch automatic skipping off when you want to hear a pitch.
Common questions
Why don't YouTube keyboard shortcuts work?
Usually because the player doesn't have focus. Click the video once, then press the key. Shortcuts also don't work while you are typing in the search box or a comment.
How do I skip 5 seconds on YouTube?
Press the right arrow key to move 5 seconds forward and the left arrow to move 5 seconds back. L and J move 10 seconds.
Can I change how far double-tap skips on the YouTube app?
Yes. The YouTube app lets you choose the double-tap seek length in its settings, so one double-tap can cover a larger part of a sponsor read.
Let the extension press L for you
SponsorSkip finds the sponsor read in the captions and jumps to where the content resumes, with Undo if it gets one wrong. Your first 20 videos are free.
