First, identify the interruption

A YouTube video can contain two different kinds of advertising. YouTube-served ads appear before or during playback. Creator-read sponsor segments are recorded into the video itself—the familiar “this video is sponsored by” passage.

That distinction matters because a normal ad blocker or YouTube Premium can remove or reduce platform ads without removing a sponsorship that is part of the uploaded video.

The three ways to skip creator sponsor reads

Manual seeking works everywhere but interrupts your attention. Community timestamp tools look up segments that other users have already marked. AI detection tools analyze the current video's captions and can work without a community timestamp for that video.

  • Manual skip: no extension, but you find the end yourself.
  • Community timestamps: effective when someone has already submitted the segment.
  • AI detection: analyzes available captions for the video you are watching.

How SponsorSkip handles it

SponsorSkip retrieves available YouTube captions and sends them to its backend for AI analysis. The detector identifies sponsor passages and returns timestamps to the extension, which skips the confirmed portions during playback.

If a skip is not useful, Undo returns to the exact moment and stores that correction locally. AI analysis sends captions to SponsorSkip and its AI provider. Transcript searches and Undo corrections stay on your device. Saved analysis results can be reused on repeat visits.

What it will not skip

SponsorSkip does not target YouTube's native pre-roll or mid-roll ads. It also needs captions to analyze a video. A video with no usable captions cannot be analyzed from captions.

That narrow scope is intentional: creator-read sponsorships and YouTube-served ads are different technical problems and should be described honestly.

Choose based on the trade-off you care about

Choose community timestamps when broad platform support and a large existing database matter most. Choose AI detection when you want to analyze a captioned video before community timestamps are available. Use manual seeking when you do not want an extension at all.
