How to skip sponsors with SponsorSkip, step by step
SponsorSkip is a Chrome extension. Once it is installed and you are signed in, the flow on a video looks like this:
- Open an English-language YouTube video that has captions. Music videos, Shorts and live streams are not analyzed.
- Press play. The analysis starts when the video plays; a video that was analyzed before loads its saved result.
- Detected sponsor segments appear as striped markers on the progress bar and in the SponsorSkip side panel.
- When playback reaches a marked segment, SponsorSkip jumps to where the content resumes and shows how much time it skipped.
- If a skip was wrong, click Undo. You return to the exact moment, and the correction is saved on your device.
- Press Alt+Shift+S to switch automatic skipping off or on. Skipping unpaid self-promotion is a separate, optional setting.
Your first 20 videos are free and need no payment details. After that, Pro allows up to 200 new video analyses a month, subject to monthly length and AI processing limits; videos that were already analyzed never count.
What it will not skip
SponsorSkip does not target YouTube's native pre-roll or mid-roll ads, and it never skips while the player is in an ad state. It also needs captions: a video with no usable captions cannot be analyzed from captions.
A sponsor that is only shown on screen, never spoken, will usually not appear in captions either. That narrow scope is intentional: creator-read sponsorships and YouTube-served ads are different technical problems.
Which method should you choose?
