The paid sponsor read
This is the classic case: the creator stops the topic, introduces a brand, explains the offer and usually ends with a discount code or link. SponsorBlock defines its Sponsor category as “paid promotion, paid referrals and direct advertisements”. YouTube describes sponsorships as content financed in whole or in part by a company.
Because it is a self-contained passage with a clear start and end, it is the easiest type to skip, by hand or with a tool.
Self-promotion: merch, memberships and the creator's own products
When the creator promotes their own merch, Patreon, channel membership, course or company, nobody outside paid for the slot. SponsorBlock files this under “Unpaid/Self Promotion” and keeps it separate from paid sponsors, partly because many viewers want to keep supporting the creator.
SponsorSkip treats it the same way: sponsor reads are skipped by default, self-promotion only if you turn that setting on.
Product placement and integrated ads
Sometimes the product is part of the content: the creator reviews a phone the brand sent, cooks with the sponsor's ingredient or travels to a sponsored location. YouTube calls this branded content where the product is “included directly in the content”. Skipping it would often remove the video itself.
SponsorBlock has a whole-video label, “Exclusive Access”, for videos showcasing something the creator got for free or at a discount. It is a label, not a skip.
Quick reference: what gets skipped
How common tools treat each kind of promotion:
| Promotion type | Example | SponsorBlock | SponsorSkip |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paid sponsor read | “This video is sponsored by…” | Sponsor (skip by default) | Skipped by default |
| Unpaid self-promotion | Merch, Patreon, own course | Unpaid/Self Promotion (optional) | Optional setting |
| Subscribe reminder | “Like and subscribe” | Interaction Reminder (optional) | Not targeted |
| Product placement | Sponsored product used in the content | Exclusive Access label only | Not targeted |
| YouTube-served ad | Pre-roll with “Skip ad” button | Not its purpose | Not its purpose |
Affiliate links and “not sponsored” recommendations
A creator may recommend a product without being paid for the mention and still earn a commission through an affiliate link. SponsorBlock's guidelines count paid referrals as sponsor content. A genuine recommendation with no payment is editorial content and should not be skipped.
This is one of the hardest calls for automatic detection, because a heartfelt recommendation and a scripted ad can use similar words. SponsorSkip looks for offer language, codes, links and the transition back to the topic before it marks anything.
Common questions
Is a merch plug a sponsor segment?
Not in the paid sense. Merch, memberships and the creator's own products are unpaid self-promotion. SponsorBlock and SponsorSkip treat them as a separate, optional category.
Can a sponsor skipper remove product placement?
Usually not. When the product is part of the content, for example a sponsored phone being reviewed, skipping it would remove the video itself.
