Speed up playback
YouTube's player goes up to 2x from the settings menu, and Shift+> or Shift+< changes speed in steps. Video Speed Controller adds finer steps and higher speeds with the S and D keys. Speech stays understandable at higher speeds than most people expect, especially with captions on (press C).
| Speed | Watching time | Saved |
|---|---|---|
| 1x | 20 min | 0 min |
| 1.25x | 16 min | 4 min |
| 1.5x | 13 min 20 s | 6 min 40 s |
| 2x | 10 min | 10 min |
Skim the transcript first
For tutorials and talks, open the transcript and read the first lines of each part. If the answer you need is in minute 12, click that line and start there.
Use chapters and number keys
Chapter titles on the progress bar tell you what to skip; Ctrl+→ (Option+→ on a Mac) jumps to the next one. Without chapters, the number keys 1 to 9 jump to 10% to 90% of the video for a quick scan.
Skip the sponsor reads
In our sample of 100 English videos with sponsors, sponsored videos spent a median of 80 seconds on sponsor reads. At 2x, that is still 40 seconds of ads per video. Skipping them is the one saving that costs no attention, because nothing you wanted is removed.
What about AI summaries?
Summary tools turn a transcript into a few paragraphs. They are useful for deciding whether to watch, but they miss tone and visuals and can get details wrong. Treat a summary as a table of contents, not a replacement for the parts that matter to you.
Common questions
What is the fastest playback speed on YouTube?
The standard player goes up to 2x. Extensions such as Video Speed Controller allow finer steps and higher speeds.
Is watching at 2x speed bad for understanding?
It depends on the content. Talking-head videos often work well sped up with captions on; dense tutorials and music don't. Slow down for the parts that matter.
The time saving that costs nothing
Faster playback still plays the ad. SponsorSkip skips sponsor reads in English videos automatically; your first 20 videos are free.
