SmartTube on Android TV and Google TV

SmartTube is an open-source YouTube client for Android TV boxes and TVs with optional SponsorBlock integration: you choose which categories to skip. It is not published on any app store, and its developer warns against downloading it from app stores, APK sites or blogs.

Two cautions from its own page: Fire TV devices running Amazon's newer Vega OS are not supported, and the developer reported that their development environment was infected by malware, after which builds are scanned and signed with a new key.

iSponsorBlockTV for almost any TV

iSponsorBlockTV takes a different route: it runs on a computer, a home server or in Docker and connects to the official YouTube app on your TV, the way your phone does when you cast. When the TV reaches a marked segment, it tells the app to seek past it.

Its compatibility table lists Apple TV, Samsung, LG, Android TV and Google TV, Chromecast, Roku, Fire TV, Nintendo Switch, Xbox and PlayStation. The catch is that a computer has to keep running.

A note on ad blocking

Several TV projects also block, mute or auto-skip YouTube's own ads. YouTube says blocking its ads violates its Terms of Service. Skipping a creator's sponsor read is a different thing from blocking YouTube's ads; if you want to stay clear of that line, turn ad-related features off where the project allows it.

The no-setup option: Jump ahead

With YouTube Premium, press the right arrow on the remote. If a dot appears on the progress bar, press right again and confirm to jump to the point most viewers skip to. It won't appear on every video and doesn't know what a sponsor is, but it works in the official app without any extra device.

Common questions

Can I skip sponsors on Apple TV?

Not with an app on the Apple TV itself in most cases. iSponsorBlockTV runs on a separate computer and controls the official YouTube app on Apple TV; Premium's Jump ahead is the built-in option.

Is SmartTube safe?

Its developer publishes it only on GitHub and F-Droid and warns against other download sites. The developer also reported a malware incident in their development environment, after which builds are scanned and re-signed. Decide with that information.
