What YouTube says about ad blockers

YouTube's help page on ad blockers is direct: when you block YouTube ads, you violate YouTube's Terms of Service. It says people using ad blockers will be asked to allow ads or sign up for Premium, and that continued use may lead YouTube to block video playback.

That page lists ad blockers such as AdBlock, Adblock Plus and uBlock Origin. It does not mention sponsor-skipping tools.

What the Terms of Service say

YouTube's Terms (effective December 15, 2023) prohibit, among other things, altering or modifying any part of the Service or Content except as expressly authorized, circumventing, disabling, fraudulently engaging with or otherwise interfering with any part of the Service, and accessing the Service using automated means such as robots or scrapers.

Those clauses are broad. Whether a tool that seeks forward in a video you are watching falls under them is not something YouTube has addressed publicly, and we can't settle it here.

Why sponsor skipping is a different case

The technical difference matters for how the tools behave:

Ad blocking compared with sponsor skipping
Ad blockerSponsor skipper
What it targetsAds YouTube serves around the videoSponsor reads inside the creator's video
How it worksBlocks ad requests or page elementsSeeks forward, like pressing L
YouTube's stated positionViolates the Terms of ServiceNot addressed publicly
Does YouTube still get its ad?NoYes, if one is served

Can you get banned for using SponsorBlock?

We are not aware of YouTube suspending accounts for skipping sponsor reads, and YouTube's documented enforcement is aimed at ad blockers. Google's own Chrome Web Store lists SponsorBlock with its Featured badge, which requires an extension to have no active policy violations; that concerns Chrome's store policies, not YouTube's terms.

SponsorSkip is built to stay on the sponsor-skipping side of that line: it never skips while YouTube's player shows a native ad.

Common questions

Will YouTube block my playback for using SponsorBlock?

YouTube's documented warnings and playback blocking target ad blockers. We found no YouTube statement about sponsor-skipping tools.

Is SponsorSkip an ad blocker?

No. It does not block or skip ads YouTube serves, and it never acts while the player shows a native ad. It only skips sponsor reads inside the creator's video.
