How do YouTube sponsors pay creators?
Deals are negotiated privately, but guides for creators describe a handful of common structures:
| Payment model | How it pays | Direct effect if you skip |
|---|---|---|
| Flat fee | A fixed amount for an agreed deliverable | Usually none for that video |
| CPM | Per 1,000 verified views of the video | Usually none, the video view still counts |
| CPA or affiliate | Per tracked sale, sign-up or install | A loss if you would otherwise have used the link or code |
| Hybrid | A smaller flat fee plus CPA | Partly, through the CPA part |
Can creators see when viewers skip the sponsor?
Not directly. Sponsor skippers seek inside the video on your device, so YouTube Studio does not report “sponsor skipped” as a separate event. A marketing agency's analysis notes that this exposure loss doesn't show up in the numbers a campaign is normally reported on; what can change is the result a brand measures through links and codes.
The long-term effect: future deals
The real question is collective. If a large share of an audience skips every read and never uses a code, the brand sees weaker results and may offer less next time or move to formats that are harder to skip, such as integrations woven into the content.
How large that effect is today isn't known. Install counts exist (SponsorBlock lists about 2 million Chrome users), but no published, reliable figure shows what share of a typical video's viewers skip its sponsor read.
Is it unfair to skip sponsors?
Reasonable people disagree. Watching a video doesn't oblige you to watch every second; people have always fast-forwarded TV ads or left the room. On the other hand, sponsorships fund a lot of the research, editing and travel behind the videos you watch.
Our position, as the makers of a skipper: skipping an ad you were never going to act on costs the creator little. Supporting the creators you value is a separate, better decision.
How to support creators while skipping sponsors
If you skip sponsor reads but want the creator to do well:
- When a sponsor genuinely interests you, use the creator's link or code; that is the part most deals measure.
- Join a channel membership, Patreon or similar, which goes to the creator directly.
- Keep self-promotion unskipped. SponsorSkip and SponsorBlock both treat merch and memberships as a separate, optional category.
- Watch with YouTube Premium if you can; YouTube shares Premium revenue with creators.
Common questions
Does skipping sponsors reduce a creator's views?
No. A skipped sponsor read is still part of a counted video view. What can change is how many people use the sponsor's link or code.
Does SponsorBlock tell creators how often their sponsor is skipped?
Creators can't see sponsor skips in YouTube Studio. SponsorBlock publishes some aggregate statistics about time saved, but not per-viewer skips to the creator.
