How does Jump ahead work?
YouTube describes it in one line: clicking Jump ahead takes you to the next point in the video most users fast forward to. It is based on how other viewers watch, not on what is said in the video. YouTube does not document exactly how the point is chosen.
How do you use Jump ahead?
According to YouTube's Premium help page, checked on October 8, 2026:
- On Android: double-tap to fast forward, or touch and hold the video to fast forward; the Jump ahead button appears.
- On TVs, streaming devices and game consoles: press the right arrow on the remote. A dot may appear on the progress bar; press right again to move to it and confirm with Enter or OK.
- You need an active YouTube Premium membership. Premium Lite does not include Jump ahead.
Where doesn't Jump ahead work?
YouTube says it is not available on Shorts, premieres, live streams, or content like music, movies and shows, and that the button may not appear on all videos. It is listed for content in Arabic, Chinese, English, French, German, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish, Thai and Turkish.
Because it depends on viewing patterns, a brand-new video or a video with few views has less data to work with.
Jump ahead vs a sponsor skipper
Both can get you past a sponsor read. They work in opposite ways:

If you mostly watch in the YouTube app on a phone or TV, Jump ahead is the only built-in option. Browser extensions, including SponsorSkip, don't run inside the official apps.
