Why podcast ads are different from YouTube ads
A host-read ad is recorded into the episode, often by the same voice as the conversation around it. To YouTube's player it is just another stretch of the video. That is why YouTube Premium, which removes ads YouTube serves, leaves it in place.
Podcasts also differ from typical videos in two ways: episodes are long, and ad breaks are often spread out. A two-hour episode can have an opening ad, one or two mid-roll breaks and a closing read.
Skipping podcast ads by hand
Many podcast channels add chapters, and ad breaks often fall right before a chapter change. Ctrl+→ (Option+→ on a Mac) jumps to the next chapter; L moves 10 seconds ahead when there are no chapters.
Host-read ads tend to be longer than a typical video sponsor and can contain several products back to back, so expect to press L more than once.
Do community timestamps cover podcasts?
SponsorBlock works on any YouTube video, podcasts included, but only for segments someone has submitted. Large shows are often marked quickly. Smaller shows, very long episodes and new uploads are more likely to have gaps, because someone has to watch far enough to find each break.
Podcast episodes also mix paid ads with promotion for the show's own Patreon, merch or tour. SponsorBlock separates those into “Sponsor” and “Unpaid/Self Promotion”, so check that both categories are set the way you want.
How AI caption analysis handles a long episode
An AI tool reads the whole transcript, so episode length matters mainly for limits and processing time. SponsorSkip analyzes English episodes with captions and marks each ad break it finds on the progress bar.
A long episode counts as one video, like any other: Pro includes up to 200 new videos a month, Ultra up to 1,000. An episode that was already analyzed for someone else is reused and doesn't count. A monthly safety limit on AI processing only matters if you watch mostly multi-hour episodes.
Conversational ads are the hard case for any detector: the host may drift from the ad back into the topic without a clear transition. When a boundary is uncertain, SponsorSkip trims it rather than cutting into the conversation, and Undo returns you to the exact moment.
What a sponsor skipper won't remove from a podcast
Live or streamed episodes are not analyzed while they are live. Visual-only sponsor logos, a mention of the sponsor inside the actual conversation and audio-only podcasts outside YouTube are also out of scope. If you listen on Spotify or Apple Podcasts, a YouTube extension does nothing there.
Common questions
Does YouTube Premium remove podcast ads?
Premium removes ads YouTube serves, but not ads the host reads inside the episode. Those are part of the video, like any creator sponsor read.
Do long podcast episodes cost more with SponsorSkip?
Each new episode counts as one video, however long it is: Pro includes up to 200 new videos a month. Episodes that were already analyzed are reused and don't count. A monthly safety limit on AI processing only matters if most of what you watch is multi-hour episodes.
