What temporarily not available usually means

SponsorBlock retrieves community timestamps through its public API. A “temporarily not available” or “API timed out” message means the client did not receive a usable server response in time. The service may be busy or unavailable, but a local network filter, VPN, DNS setup, or client integration can produce a similar symptom.

SponsorBlock documents a public status endpoint at sponsor.ajay.app/api/status. Check it before reinstalling anything. A healthy status response does not prove every regional route or third-party client is working, but it separates a broad outage from a likely local problem.

No skip does not always mean an outage

SponsorBlock can only return a community segment that exists in its database. A new, obscure, or unsponsored video may have no matching record. In that case the API can be healthy while the extension correctly has nothing to skip.

Test with a video where SponsorBlock's timeline already shows a colored sponsor segment. If that works, the original video probably has no submitted segment or the relevant category is disabled.

Browser extension checklist

For the official browser extension, work from the simplest checks outward.

  • Confirm SponsorBlock is enabled on youtube.com and that the official listing is installed.
  • Reload the video tab after installing or updating the extension.
  • Open SponsorBlock settings and confirm the Sponsor category is set to automatic skip or show a prompt.
  • Test with other extensions temporarily disabled if a content blocker is blocking SponsorBlock's API request.
  • Check browser developer tools only if you are comfortable identifying failed requests to sponsor.ajay.app.

ReVanced, NewPipe, and other clients

Third-party clients integrate SponsorBlock separately, so their settings and release compatibility matter. An API timeout can come from SponsorBlock's service, while missing controls or a broken overlay can come from the client or patch version.

Update the client and its patches, confirm SponsorBlock is enabled inside that client, and use that project's own troubleshooting guide. Do not assume instructions for the Chrome extension apply unchanged to an Android or TV client.

Make sure you are testing the right kind of ad

SponsorBlock skips creator-recorded segments inside the uploaded video. It is not a blocker for pre-roll or mid-roll ads served by YouTube. If the player is showing a native YouTube ad, SponsorBlock not skipping it is expected behavior rather than a fault.

When AI detection is a useful fallback

An AI caption detector does not depend on SponsorBlock's segment API or on another viewer submitting the video first. That can help during a community-service outage or on a fresh upload, provided YouTube supplies usable captions.

AI detection can also make mistakes and requires its own backend to be available. SponsorSkip publishes a scoped evaluation of sponsor time detected and skip precision on its comparison page; those results do not guarantee performance on every video.
