Where do timing errors come from?
Every skip is only as good as its two boundaries. Errors come from four places:
- Hand placement: a person scrubbed to roughly the right second and submitted it.
- Unclear transitions: creators often write a segue that is half topic, half ad, so “where the sponsor starts” is a judgment call.
- Caption timing: automatic captions are timed in chunks and can overlap, so a word's caption may appear slightly before or after it is spoken.
- Video edits: if the creator re-uploads or trims a video, old timestamps no longer line up.
Real examples from community timestamps
In our August 24, 2026 review of saved SponsorBlock entries against the captions, two cases illustrate the two directions:
| Video | Saved segment | What we observed |
|---|---|---|
| OverSimplified | 1014.8 s to 1083.2 s | The narrative resumed at about 1077.2 s, so the skip ran about 6 seconds into the content |
| Johnny Harris | 1153.3 s to 1292.0 s | About 39 seconds of topical setup sat inside the segment before the sponsor was disclosed |
Two examples say nothing about how often this happens across SponsorBlock's database. Community entries are also corrected over time, and the second case is partly a judgment call about where editorial setup ends.
Why AI timing can be off too
An AI tool decides boundaries from caption lines. YouTube's automatic captions are machine-generated and grouped into short lines whose timings can overlap, so the exact word where the pitch ends may sit inside a line that also contains the next sentence.
SponsorSkip checks the transcript context around each boundary and, when it is unsure, trims the skip so it ends early rather than cutting into the content. The cost of that choice is that you may hear the last second of a pitch.
How to fix a bad skip
What you can do depends on the tool:
- SponsorBlock: vote the segment down or submit a corrected one so the next viewer gets better timing; switch a category to “show button” if automatic skips annoy you.
- SponsorSkip: press Undo to jump back to the exact moment; the correction is stored on your device for that video.
- Any tool: J (back 10 seconds) and the left arrow (back 5) undo an overshoot by hand.
How to judge a tool's accuracy claims
Two numbers matter: how much sponsor time was skipped (recall) and how much normal content was skipped by mistake. A tool that reports only the first can look great by cutting generously. Our own published test reports both: 95% of known sponsor time skipped and 0.08 seconds of content skipped by mistake on 20 new English videos, with the method and its limits.
Common questions
How accurate are SponsorBlock timestamps?
Often good, especially on popular videos that many people have reviewed, but they are placed by hand. Our August 2026 review found individual entries that started early or ended late; that is not a database-wide error rate.
Why does a skip cut off the first words after the sponsor?
The segment's end time is a little later than the moment the content resumes. Press J or the left arrow to go back, or use the tool's undo or correction feature.
