How YouTube creates automatic captions

YouTube runs speech recognition over the audio and generates captions automatically, in many languages. English captions can even show speech intensity and sounds. Creators can upload their own captions or correct the automatic ones, and YouTube recommends reviewing them.

Where automatic captions go wrong

YouTube itself names the main causes. In practice they look like this:

Common caption problems and their effect
CauseTypical result
Accents, dialects, fast speechWrong or merged words
Names, brands and jargonBrand names spelled phonetically or replaced by common words
Background music or noiseMissing passages
Several people talking at onceLines that mix speakers or drop words
Long silence at the start, very long videosNo automatic captions at all

How precise is caption timing?

Caption files time lines, not words. In the 100 English caption tracks from our sponsor-length study, consecutive lines overlapped in time in every video, by a median of 2.1 seconds, and each line stayed on screen for a median of 4.2 seconds. That is fine for reading along, but it means a caption timestamp is only a rough pointer to when a word is spoken.

What this means for sponsor detection

Caption-based tools, including SponsorSkip, inherit these limits. A misheard brand name can hide that a passage is an ad; a coarse line timing can blur the exact second where the sponsor ends. That is why SponsorSkip looks at the whole context of a passage instead of one keyword, and trims a boundary when it is unsure rather than cutting into the content.

Videos without captions can't be analyzed by caption-based tools at all; SponsorSkip tells you when a video has no captions available.

How to get better captions on a video

As a viewer, you can't fix them, but you can choose: if a video has creator-uploaded captions as well as automatic ones, the uploaded track is usually more accurate. In the player's settings, under Subtitles/CC, tracks marked “auto-generated” are the machine version.

Common questions

Can I tell if captions are auto-generated?

Yes. In the player's Subtitles/CC menu, automatic tracks are labeled auto-generated.

Do auto captions exist for every language?

No. YouTube supports automatic captions in many but not all languages, and live-stream automatic captions are English only.
